Collies make wonderful companion and therapy dogs. They possess an uncanny sense of right
and wrong, and their compassion is unbounded.
Great Therapy Dogs need training
and guidance. Enroll your dog/puppy in your local dog training
facility/animal shelter therapy dog
class and CGC (Canine Good Citizen) class. Upon
completing the class(es) the dog will be
tested for both TDI and CGC, and will be awarded these
titles by the AKC.
Dogs are taught basic
manners, socialization and interaction with the disabled, including
exposure to wheel chairs,
walkers, crippled and mentally challenged. They will also be taught
the “leave it” command. This
command is crucial in case medications are dropped on the floor.
The owner will also be taught
how to handle the dog with the disabled, elderly and children.
Therapy dogs are also requested
to particulate in children’s school reading programs both at a
local library, bookstore or school.
Children develop confidence when they read to a willing and
loving companion.
“Dogs are not
our whole life, but they make our lives whole.” Roger Caras
